The early seventeenth century was a time of political and social upheaval, when magic and medicine were still entwined, and the Bible was being used as a prime source of magical material for spells and conjurations. This was the age of the Cunning Men and Women, making a living through their eclectic and pragmatic approach to achieving practical results through magic.

Drawing on a huge range of old manuscripts and research, this lecture will explore the hidden and mysterious world of the Cunning-folk – from conjurations of angels and demons to faeries and the dead, herb lore and Psalm magic – focussed on the work of the 17th century cunning man Arthur Gauntlet, who worked and lived in London.
